The Importance of Belonging
A one-day workshop designed to facilitate communication, thought, and action around community
 Offered in two locations
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH, IN SAVANNAH, GA
9:00-4:00
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH, IN MACON, GA
9:00-4:00

Individuals who have challenging behaviors are often limited in the opportunities and possibilities for a meaningful life in the community. Being connected to the people we love is critical to our emotional and physical well-being. David Pitonyak, Ph.D. presents ideas for moving beyond interventions and coverage to a system that supports enduring, freely chosen relationships.

David Pitonyak's work addresses approaches to difficult behaviors. He believes that difficult behaviors are “messages” which can tell us important things about a person and his or her surroundings. Understanding the “meaning” of an individual’s difficult behaviors is the first step in supporting the person, and that person’s supporters, to change.

Upside Down and Inside Out:
Supporting a Person in Crisis
A one-day workshop examining the strategies for supporting a person in crisis
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH, IN decatur, GA
9:30-4:30

People often engage in aggressive or self-injurious behavior because their needs are not being met, and no one has taken the steps to address the problems that precipitate those behaviors. A person in crisis needs caregivers to listen carefully and act with the belief that the person, no matter how confused or stressed, is attempting to communicate a message.

Each person in distress experiences distinct physiological changes and will react accordingly. David Pitonyak focuses on the physiology of these moments, the reasons why a person may be in and out of crisis, and strategies a person and his or her caregivers may employ to successfully avoid a stressful situation elevating into a crisis.
